Winter Driving Safety Checklist for Canadian Commuters

A winter driving safety checklist makes preparation easier when snow, freezing rain or poor visibility arrives. Use this quick routine before every cold-weather commute, then adjust your speed and following distance to the conditions you actually encounter.

Before You Leave

Check conditions: Review the forecast, road reports and expected visibility. Delay a non-essential trip when conditions are severe.
Clear the entire vehicle: Remove snow and ice from windows, mirrors, lights, cameras and the roof.
Check tires: Confirm suitable tires, adequate tread and correct cold-weather pressure.
Top up fluids: Use winter-rated windshield washer fluid and keep enough fuel or charge for delays.
Pack essentials: Carry warm clothing, gloves, a flashlight, charger, scraper, small shovel and other supplies appropriate for the route.

Dashcam Readiness Check

Cold weather can expose a weak memory card or power connection. Before setting off, confirm that the camera starts recording, the lens and windshield area are clear, and the date and time are correct. If the camera has multiple channels, verify the front, rear and cabin views.

During the Drive

Reduce speed before reaching slippery sections.
Leave substantially more following distance than on a dry road.
Brake, steer and accelerate smoothly.
Use low-beam headlights in snow or fog and keep them clear.
Watch bridges, ramps and shaded areas, which can become slippery sooner.
Avoid cruise control when traction is inconsistent.

If Visibility Drops Suddenly

Slow progressively and avoid abrupt lane changes. If continuing is unsafe, leave the roadway at a suitable exit or stop in a safe designated area. Avoid stopping in a live traffic lane or on a shoulder unless an emergency makes it necessary.

After the Trip

Brush snow and road salt away from camera lenses.
Save any important footage before normal loop recording overwrites it.
Recharge emergency devices and replace anything used from the vehicle kit.
Address warning lights, damaged wipers or pressure loss before the next drive.
